“I felt guilty for killing them after coming such

a long way to survive, but there was an honor in

feeding them to people.” He still seemed racked

by guilt. “It was my job,” he insisted.

“Sweetheart, I’m not judging you. I am proud

of you. You’re the finest chef I know.”

“Don’t say that too loudly,” Henriette said. “We

don’t want the chef here to know you’re saying

that. He might spit in our food.”

After our wonderful meal, Jean-Luc let me have

two cups of coffee and opted himself for a local

liqueur made of pecan pralines. My heart

medications meant I couldn’t even dare a sip and I

would have invaded his mouth with my tongue

for sloppy seconds, but we were in polite

company. I could hardly wait to get him in our car

to taste his mouth.
